Project Development Clinic Mentors

Kim Dongwon
Director, Head of Purun Media / Korea

Director Kim Dongwon is one of the key persons in Korean independent documentaries. Since his debut, he's been focusing on making documentaries and looking into real-life and social issues in Korea. His main filmography includes Sanggye-Dong Olympics (1988), The Six Day Fight in Myong Dong Cathedral (1997), Repatriation (2004) and 63 Years On (2008). Repatriation about long-term political prisoners was shown in the Wide Angle section at the 9th Busan International Film Festival and won the best documentary film award at the Seoul Independent Film Festival 2003 and the Freedom of Expression Award at the Sundance Film Festival 2004. Kim served as the chief director of the Association of Korea Independent Film & Video (1998-2003). He is currently the head of Purun Media, a representative group of documentary filmmakers in Korea in addition to being a professor at the School of Film, TV & Multimedia at the Korea National University of Arts.

Ko Youngjae
Producer, CEO of Indieplug / Korea

Since 2006, he has been the secretary general of the Association of Korea Independent Film & Video. He is also the head of a film studio Nurimbo which produced Our School (2006), Life Track (2007) and Old Partner (2008) among others. He recently founded a digital distributor Indieplug Inc. to distribute independent films.

Zhang Xian Min
Professor of Beijing Film Academy, Producer / China

Born in 1964, Zhang Xian Min attended Beijing Foreign Languages University and Paris Sorbonne III. In 1992, after graduating FEMIS in France, he started teaching at Beijing Film Academy. Since then, he has featured as an actor in Zhang Ming's Rain clouds over Wushan (1994) and Lou Ye's Summer Palace (2004), wrote and translated film-related books, and directed 3 documentary films. Recently, he organized CDFF (China Documentary Film Festival) and The 3rd China Independent Film Festival. As a professor of Beijing Film Academy, he was the President of the organization committee for a screenplay competition called Golden Words Awards and participated in ISFVF, the International Student Film and Video Festival as a programmer.

Nick Ware
Media Consultant, Aster Media / UK

Nick Ware is an executive producer and media consultant working across the broadcast and digital media sectors. Recently he has worked with The Africa Channel, Mercury Media, The Wellcome Trust and Orange Sky, a new independent production company. He works with documentary producers, festivals and documentary events around the world and is currently developing a major project in India. Nick was previously Managing Editor of BBC Four; Creative Director of BBC Learning, and Commissioning Executive for Arts Programmes at BBC.

Catherine Le Clef
CEO, CAT&Docs / France

After three years with Fortissimo Films, nine with Doc & Co and 15 with Films Transit International in Montreal, Catherine Le Clef decided to set up her own company: CAT&Docs. CAT&Docs' focus is on promoting and distributing all types of documentaries across all types of media, around the world. CAT&Docs is looking for pertinent and impertinent films on topical questions and timeless subjects - documentaries that are carefully researched, that are audacious and those that question the world and propose new ways of looking at it.

Peter Jager
CEO, Autlook Filmsales GmbH / Austria

Born in 1968 in Belgium, Peter studied Law and Philosophy. As a young film freak, Peter helped to create a new film magazine with fellow students and became Commercial and Marketing Director. Following his passion for film Peter became Marketing and Acquisitions Consultant for several major independent film distributors and film exhibitors. In 2005, together with Austrian production companies, Peter founded and became Managing Director of Autlook Filmsales. Documentaries like Our Daily Bread and Blind Loves were sold worldwide to theatrical distributors.

Soda Kazuhiro
Documentary filmmaker / Japan

Soda Kazuhiro debut with the Feature Documentary Commentary, Campaign (2007) which premiered at the 2007 Berlin International Film Festival. He received the honor of 2008 Peabody Award, and received the Best Film Award at the 2009 Belgrade International Documentary & Short Film. Soon after, the second documentary, Mental (2008) received 2008 Busan International Film Festival BIFF Mecenat, Dubai International Film Festival Best Documentary Award and 2009 Miami International Film Festival Special Jury Mention. In addition, the film earned him the Outstanding Documentary Award at the Hong Kong International Film Festival and the Interreligious Jury Prize at the Visions du Reel. The latest work, Peace (2010) won the Audience Award at the Tokyo Filmex and the Best Documentary at the 2011 Hong Kong International Film Festival. Soda has shown remarkable activity as a documentary director.

Han Jeesoo
Vice President, Media Special, Chairman of Global Strategy Committee, inDiEPD / Korea

Han Jeesoo has been an active documentary director and producer for more than a decade. As the most experienced international co-producer in Korea, she has set up Korean documentarians with funds from foreign television broadcasters and producers. She also has a solid foundation as a television drama and documentary producer in Korea. In 2008, Han received Professional Certification from the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University. Since returning to Korea, she has been involved in Asian and other pan-continental global co-production projects, and has served as jury member at numorous film festivals. Additionally, she has lectured on documentary for the last ten years, and now acts as director of Media Special Co. and chairperson of the Global Strategy Committee of the inDiEPD (The Independent Broadcasting Producers& Directors Association of Korea).
