Director's Profile Myriam el Hajj is a Lebanese filmmaker who pursued her Master’s degree in Filmmaking and Theatre in France. Her first feature documentary, A Time to Rest, premiered in Visions du Reel - Nyon and received many awards. Myriam teaches cinema at the Lebanese Academy of Fine Arts.
Synopsis
Paris 2018. Nour, a young Lebanese commedia dell’arte actress, returns home following the arrest of her father, an established politician who committed a bomb attack. Determined to save him, Nour seeks to understand the reason behind this act. Her return awakens an old suspended love: Nassib, a politician running for the first legislative elections to be held in Lebanon in nine years. Nour discovers the roots of conflict in a corrupted country. Her investigation transforms into a quest that leads her to mourn over the ideal image she had of her father and her love.
Director's Note
Continuing the exploration of my feature documentary A Time to Rest, Commedia addresses the past that doesn’t want to let go of the present. It’s the story of individuals unfolding in the context of a declining society where all the men live under the shadow of the Civil War. In this men’s world, Nour is trying, just like me, to find her place in a country full of paradoxes. She is an alternative feminine future for this part of the world that is getting weaker every day. Yet, it still functions in the same vicious manners although it cannot afford it anymore.
