Director's Profile Pin Pin TAN`s works have won numerous awards and nominations. Her film [Moving House] (2001) was the first documentary conceived and produced by a Singaporean that was shown on Discovery Channel in Asia. Meanwhile, [Singapore Gaga] (2005), a documentary about sounds of Singapore is the first Singapore documentary to have a theatrical release screening to sell out audiences. It was also invited to International Film Festival of Rotterdam and the Berlin House of World Cultures. She has an MFA from Northwestern University where she was awarded the Eastman Scholarship for Cinematography and Rajaratnam Scholarship.
[Invisible City] is a feature length documentary about the inner life of Singapore through its spaces. It is about public, private, inside outside spaces that one would not ordinarily notice because they are considered too transitional, too ordinary. But for some of those who inhabit or use these spaces, they throb with meaning, with history and life. Through [Invisible City] we witness how a space becomes more than just mortar and bricks, how the banal is rendered profound. It asks, What makes a home? What are the basic needs of human existence?
Director's Note
I find Singapore, her surrounding countries, our history and people fascinating. Every time I peel away a layer to expose what I think is the definitive mark of the land, I discover more layers to uncover. So I became a director to give myself a good excuse to wander around the country like a native tourist, talking to people, and documenting what I see and hear on a nimble camera to learn more. Through these sojourns, I find myself uncovering inchoate yearnings and undercurrents that have never been expressed.
