Synopsis
Marte(39) is the mother of two children, living in Oslo Norway. She starts sending audiovisual letters with stories of her everyday life to a Koren friend Jero (37), who lives in Seoul. Soon, this letter becomes a medium for a man and a woman living across the world to communicate and understand each other.
Director's Note
The two directors Marte Vold and Jero Yun met in Copenhagen for the first time in 2015. From similar generations, the Norwegian and Korean became interested in the differences of the environment, culture, and language each has grown up in. The video became a medium for them to get to know each other. The work Letters was created in memory of the hand-written letters that pen pals used to exchange before the birth of the internet.

Marte Bold, 39 years old, is the mother of two children. As a mother (a parent), Marte shows Jero her social position as a woman and the human warmth found in her everyday life with her children. Jero, 37 years old, lives in a small flat in Seoul with his cat. Occasionally seeing his parents living in Busan, through his relationship with an alcohol-dependent father and a devoted Christian mother, he shares with Marte his social position and his gaze on parents from the child’s perspective.

Although Marte and Jero are living on the other side of the world from each other, they communicate through this film, discovering differences and commonalities. Thus they present to the audience a deep sense of humanism that can be found amongst everyday life and the relationship with one’s family.
