“Phadke building”, home to 4 generations of the Phadke family becomes a psychological model of its inhabitants. Madhav is 87, the patriarchal head of this family who is diabetic and hard of hearing. His wife, Neela is 86 and has had several hip surgeries. Housebound for 5 years and wrapped within the apparent domesticity, the story reveals the eccentric octogenarians who obsess about the daily rituals that they approach with idiosyncratic discipline, eager to find purpose to their otherwise sterile life. Atul is 52. a spitting image of Madhav. Maneesha has been married to Atul for 33 years. Rohan, Atul’s son is 28. Recently engaged, he will be the first man in the Phadke family to leave both the family business and their 102-year-old ancestral home, to start a new life with his wife-to-be. The film paints an intimate portrait of 3 couples ? real, yet strange in equal parts, all living under one roof to understand the workings of love, and how it changes over time.
I am a woman filmmaker from India and grew up in a patriarchal household. The reason for my making this film is to find my own place in society and to find the answers to all the questions I have had with my upbringing. I am interested in looking at closely knit family bonds to explore the role of a woman in an Indian household whilst observing the events, circumstances, and demands to understand her disabilities in a male-driven society. My exploration lies in the everydayness of life. Women have been suppressed for centuries in India. Looking at 3 generations of women in my own family, whose independence is tied down in traditional webs, I want to also create a social paper that journeys into looking at the family as the most basic unit of society and understand the ever-changing larger social context. This is not only a film for myself but also a research into the unique impediments women face in routines that have been setup over centuries.
