A lecture by Taiwanese renowned musician Lim Giong, focused on documentary film and music, with his detailed work experiences

LIM Giong Musician: Born in 1964, Lim Giong is Taiwanese renowned musician. He made a debut in 1990 with his first album, “Marching Forward”, which made a big hit. Up until 2000, he had actively worked as a singer, composer, DJ and producer. He also appeared on several films by respected director Hou Hsiao-Hsien, which pulled him into the world of cinema. After having founded his studio in 2000, he has concentrated on film music, working with Hou Hsiao-Hsien, Jia Zhangke and other emerging filmmakers. Along with award winning film works, he keeps presenting his unique music combining image and sound in diverse art forms such as installation, performance, and so on.

A conversation with Joshua Oppenheimer, directed controversial films, The Look of Silence (2014) and The Act of Killing (2012)

Joshua OPPENHEIMER Film Director: Born in 1974, USA, Joshua Oppenheimer is based in Copenhagen, Denmark, where he is a partner at the production company Final Cut for Real. Oppenheimer has worked for over a decade with militias, death squads and their victims to explore the relationship between political violence and the public imagination. Educated at Harvard and Central Saint Martins, his debut feature-length film is The Act of Killing (2012). His earlier works include The Globalisation Tapes (2003, produced with Christine Cynn), The Entire History of the Louisiana Purchase (1998), These Places We’ve Learned to Call Home (1996), and other shorts. Oppenheimer is artistic director of the International Centre for Documentary and Experimental Film, University of Westminster.

Fiona LAWSON-BAKER Senior Producer of Al Jazeera English: Fiona has more than 15 years’ experience in factual television across the UK, Australia and Asia. She started her broadcast career at BBC London. As an AFTRS graduate, she worked for SBS television in production, commissioning and acquisitions. Since 2008, she has worked in Singapore and Malaysia, overseeing productions for Al Jazeera English (AJE), ZDF, Discovery, History and Crime & Investigation Channels. Currently, Fiona is based in Malaysia with AJE sourcing documentaries from the Asia Pacific region for the flagship documentary strand, Witness. She also commissioned the award winning Wukan: The Flame of Democracy (2013) and Viewfinder Asia series.
FUJIOKA AsakoFormer director of Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival: Born in 1966, Asako Fujioka spent childhood years in New York and Duesseldorf, Germany. Since 1993, she had worked with Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival. Also, she has coordinated New Asian Currents program, a collection of films and videos by emerging documentarists from around Asia from 1995 to 2003. Since 1997, she is the main crew for New Cinema from Japan, the pioneer initiative supporting producers and directors presenting new Japanese films overseas. Bridging film cultures and audiences, she is also actively working as interpreter and translator for international film affairs.
HONG HyungsookFilm Director: HONG Hyungsook had directed documentary films as a member of Seoul Visual Collective, a group of progressive filmmakers since 1987. She directed several award winning documentaries such as Doomealee, a New School is Opening (1995), On-Line: An Inside View Of Korean Independent Film (1997), Reclaiming Our Name (1998), The Border City (2002), The Border City 2 (2009), and so on. She is also a producer of Forest Dancing (2012, directed by Kang Seokpil). She currently is working at Gamuin Film as director and producer.
Inka ACHETESales and Acquisitions of Taskovski Films: Inka has over a decade of experience working in the film and television industries in her native Finland and in the UK. Her background is in independent filmmaking with the focus on screenwriting and documentary directing, on numerous award-winning single films and TV-series. She graduated with a postgraduate degree from the National Film and Television School in the UK in 2012, and joined the Taskovski Films Sales and Acquisitions team soon thereafter. In addition to this she mentors and consults postgraduate film students at the Raindance Film Institute in London.
KIM OkyoungPresident of Story On, Documentary writer: Kim Okyoung has written documentary series for Korean major broadcasters such as KBS, MBC, YTN on the subject of modern and contemporary history. She served as adjunct professor in School of Communications & Media of Seoul Women’s University and Film, TV & Multimedia School of Korean National University of Arts. She also has been jury member or mentor for various documentary related award and events. She was the chairman of the board of Korean TV & Radio Writers Association from 2008 to 2012. She is currently the president of Story On, and also oversees documentary production.
Sean FARNELProprietor of Ripping Reality, Former programmer of Hot Docs and Toronto IFF / Canada: Sean Farnel specializes in festivals and digital distribution, primarily for creative documentary. Prior to working independently, he was Director of Programming at Hot Docs, North America's largest documentary festival, market and conference. He started his career at the Toronto International Film Festival, where he became a staff Programmer specializing in documentary and learning programs. Sean is a graduate of Cinema Studies from one of Canada's most respected film schools, Concordia University. Upon graduation he received the Motion Picture Foundation of Canada Award for Most Outstanding Achievement. He was a Jury member for 2013 Sundance Film Festival World Cinema Documentary section.
ZHANG Xian MinProfessor of Beijing Film Academy, Producer, Film Curator: Born in 1964, Zhang Xian Min Attended Beijing Foreign Languages University and Paris Sorbonne III. In 1992, after graduating FEMIS in France, he started teaching at Beijing Film Academy. Since then he featured as an actor in several films and has produced or co-produced films such as Fujian Blue (2007), Crossroads (2008), Old Dog (2011), to name a few. He also wrote and translated a couple of film-related books and has actively organized a lot of workshops, showcases, events focused on Chinese indie cinema.
