Synopsis
Shahrzaad’s Tale is a story of a lost era and a forgotten star of pre-revolutionary Iranian cinema. Shahrzaad is the pseudonym of early 60s popular Iranian actor, also a published writer and a filmmaker. She saw her fortunes plummet dramatically after the Revolution of 1979. Today after more than 30 years of being out of work, in her mid-sixties, Shahrzaad is a wandering homeless. A tale of an incredible female artist caught in three decades of political turmoil in the cultural landscape of contemporary Iran.
Director's Note
Growing up in Iran, I was exposed to Iranian popular cinema, “Film Farsi” genre of 1960s-1970s. So as a child, fascinated by silver screen, I was familiar with Shahrzaad’s who was a regular star of such films. Later on, as I grew older, I learned that she also was a published poet and a filmmaker.
About two years ago I read an online report on her situation and her life as the most famous homeless woman in Iran. Her story deeply saddened me and inspired me to document the life of this extraordinary woman. A tale of a working class artist who against all the odds succeeded to be an icon in the mainstream popular culture of 1960s-70s Iran, as well as an intellectual writer/poet and a filmmaker.
