Director's Profile Universe Baldoza is a filmmaker and video artist from Manila, Philippines. She completed her screenwriting residency in the ASEAN in Residence programme in Thailand. She was also a participant in DocNet SouthEast Asia's Summer School, Berlinale Talents Script Station and Berlinale Doc Station where she worked on the initial development of her documentary Audio Perpetua.
Synopsis
When I first encountered a random set of audio files left on my laptop, I was treated to a rich and strange verbatim of confessions by strangers. Within a minute, I was visualizing this speaker, this peculiar man with a specific US accent describing his years as a police officer in training. But his voice sounded weary, resigned. There's a certain sadness about the way these people describe their lives in great detail.
The process so far has been a constant struggle, a dance to present a balance between legal, creative, factual or just plain expressionistic points of view. I feel the characters themselves, both sighted and non-sighted have their own interesting threads. It is a long process of observing people and listening to where their stories take you.
