- Synopsis
- Fly by Night is a Malaysian crime drama film set in modern day Kuala Lumpur about four criminals who have perfected their small but profitable con game, who made the simple, human error of wanting more. It is a story about four friends who learn that survival means knowing what and who to sacrifice. And that sometimes, no matter how careful you are, there are no clean getaways. Taking place in 2015-2017, four Malaysian taxi drivers operate an extortion ring, identifying rich passengers and blackmailing them. The drivers know where they live, where they work. No place to run. Nothing to do but pay. The con is simple, almost perfect. Until… one ring member pulls a solo takedown, an event that ends up pulling an underworld casino owner, tycoon and a manipulative police inspector into its orbit. This… is that story.
- Director's Note
- Malaysia has always been a city that has so much color, yet, sometimes we are so afraid to look in the mirror and see who we really are. This film will hold up a mirror to our society and reveal what is in the reflection: humans in their truest form. It will show that there is no black or white, no good or evil, only the people showing their truest form when driven into a corner. My inspirations come from watching and observing people and how they react in different situations. After travelling and working around the world, one starts to notice that underneath it all we are all the same. We all have preconceived notions of what society thinks is good and bad. We would like to think to ourselves that we would never cross that line. Most of us only treacly know when we get there. We are also capable of going to great lengths to hold on and protect the things we hold dear. This is what inspires me the most, the beauty of realism. Telling humanity that it’s ok to be human.
